Just doing my daily trawl of the Wall Street Journal and came across an article about Motorola who reported earnings yesterday, handily beating expectations.
The money quote is:
“There’s no magic here” said Ed Zander, Motorola’s chairman and chief executive officer, in an interview. “When you focus on customers and developing compelling new products that they want, this is what you get,” he said.
Enough said.

"Compelling" is the operative word here. You can't discount the role of marketing. Developing innovative products people want is only part of the equation. Helping them to understand and appreciate the positive implications--the compelling role of marketing--is the other part.
